Canopius Hires Liberty Mutual’s Johnson as CUO U.S. and Bermuda

Canopius Group, a global specialty re/insurer, announced it has hired Coleman V. Johnson as its chief underwriting officer US and Bermuda. Johnson joins Canopius USA’s growing leadership team as the company continues its expansion in the US.

Johnson brings more than 20 years of multifaceted underwriting and insurance leadership experience to his new role. Most recently, he served as senior vice president and chief underwriting officer, Middle Market, for Liberty Mutual where he drove significant profitable growth and retention in the company’s US Middle Market P/C business. Prior to his position at Liberty Mutual, Johnson held senior leadership positions at The Hanover Insurance Group and The Hartford.

Johnson will report to both Lisa Davis, chief executive, Canopius US and Bermuda, and Mike Duffy, Canopius group chief underwriting officer.

Prior to Johnson’s arrival, Davis was acting US and Bermuda CUO in addition to her role as chief executive, Canopius US and Bermuda. Under Davis’s leadership, Canopius USA continues to build out its leadership team and add top quality talent, having increased staff by more than 30% since 2020. In the last 18 months, Canopius USA appointed Greg Alcazar as chief financial officer, Serena Lee as General Counsel, and Adam Finkle as chief operations officer.

AXA XL Promotes McKinley to Casualty Leader for N. America Construction Business

AXA XL Insurance has promoted Michael McKinley to lead Construction Primary Casualty Insurance business in North America.

Based in Atlanta, in his new role, McKinley will lead the continued growth of AXA XL’s Construction Primary Casualty business, helping construction companies address their auto liability, general liability, workers’ compensation and wrap-up insurance needs.

In addition to McKinley’s proven track record for building business here, he brings a collective 25 years of insurance industry experience to his new role, including six years spent on Zurich Insurance’s Construction team.

He began his insurance career as a field underwriter for Westfield Insurance. A graduate of Marietta College, Mr. McKinley earned Certified Risk Management (CRM), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) and Construction Risk & Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designations

“Our clients have relied on Mike for their Wrap Up or Owner-Controlled Insurance Programs (OCIPs) for more than a decade. When he joined us in 2011, he developed our Construction Wrap Up program capabilities from the ground up. Despite a slight downturn during COVID, our Wrap Up business has continued to grow and 2022 is looking like it will be our best year yet,” according to Gary Kaplan, president of AXA XL’s Construction insurance business.
