Oklahoma Offers Relief for Agents on Active Duty

April 18, 2003

Insurance Commissioner Carroll Fisher announced plans to defer continuing education requirements for insurance agents, adjusters and bail bondsmen who are called upon to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Insurance agents and adjusters and bail bondsmen are required to fulfill continuing education requirements in order to renew their license. Department rules allow Fisher to extend the deadline for completing the requirement by up to one year for agents and adjusters and up to six months for bail bondsmen.

Fisher said that agents and adjusters should notify the Oklahoma Insurance Department of their need for the deferment when they apply to renew their license or when they complete their tour of duty. In addition to the request, they must provide documentation that they have been called to active duty, or a copy of their separation orders. Rules governing bondsmen require them to request an extension of time before August 30.

“We have had military personnel contact us to let us know they will have problems with continuing education requirements,” Fisher said. “Of course, we want to help them in any way possible.

“Military personnel are making great sacrifices to fight on behalf of America,” Fisher said. “I am sure all Americans are looking for ways to help the military and show support for the troops.”

For more information about the deferment, contact the Oklahoma Insurance Department toll free statewide at (800) 522-0071 or via the Internet at www.oid.state.ok.us.
