January 7, 2004

The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) announced it elected Richard A. Mayer to serve as chairman of the board of directors beginning Jan.1, 2004. Mayer was elected at the December board meeting in San Antonio.

Mayer is the assistant vice-president of Commercial Lines with The Republic Group of Companies, in Dallas. He began his insurance career as an underwriter at Utica National in 1978. Mayer rose up through the ranks as a marketing representative, supervising underwriter, underwriting manager and resident vice-president. He joined Republic in 2003.

Mayer holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation as well as the Associate in Underwriting, Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Accredited Advisor in Insurance (AAI) professional designations and Associate in Insurance services.

James E. Langford, senior vice-president of Compliance, Regulatory and Government Affairs, Texas Farm Bureau, in Waco, was elected vice-chairman. Michael Mott, regional vice-president of the Personal Market, Liberty Mutual, in Dallas, was elected secretary. Dorothy Langley, vice-president corporate counsel, Unitrin, in Dallas, was elected secretary.

John C. Crisci, associate vice-president of Industrial Relations, USAA, San Antonio, served as ICT board chairman until his retirement Dec. 31, 2003.

“I look forward to serving as chairman of one of the most prestigious and productive insurance trade organizations in the country,” Mayer said. “These are exciting times because of the changing environment and changes in store for the future.”

Mayer said the Insurance Council of Texas would continue to represent the insurance industry as well as consumers. He said ICT’s annual symposium, its reliability as a resource for updated information on state rules, regulation and legislation and its recent creation of the Texas Committee on Insurance Fraud are clear indications that the association is a driving force in the insurance industry.

“We are there for everybody,” Mayer said. “Giving our members the opportunity to remain profitable, while meeting the needs of our policyholders, the consumers of Texas, remains our goal.”
