Derek Wooley, son of Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Robert Wooley, is leaving his job as governmental affairs representative with the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America to become the new executive director of the Louisiana Democratic Party.
According to the Associated Press, state Democratic party chairman Mike Skinner said Wooley, a 1999 political science graduate of LSU, will report for duty in about three weeks.
Wooley reportedly knows many political figures in Louisiana, having worked on the campaigns of U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, former state Treasurer Ken Duncan and Marjorie McKeithen, when she challenged Republican U.S. Rep. Richard Baker.
He also worked as an intern for U.S. Sen. John Breaux.
Skinner said the party got 26 applicants for the director’s job. The salary “is still up for discussion,” he said.
Wooley replaces Scott Arceneaux, who has joined the U.S. Senate campaign of Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris John, D-Crowley.
