Marietta McCain of San Antonio, Texas, has been honored with the Bernard J. Burns Award, bestowed annually upon the agent or broker making the most significant impact on fundraising efforts for InsurPac, the political action committee of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America.
McCain is the founder and president of the Luhn-McCain Insurance Agency in San Antonio. As Texas InsurPac chairwoman in 2003, McCain achieved a number of record accomplishments. Texas not only met its fundraising goal for the first time ever, but surpassed it significantly, setting an all-time record for any Big “I” state association. The amount raised by the group in 2003 more than doubled the 2002 total raised by Texas agents and brokers.
The award is named after Bernard J. Burns, the founding father of InsurPac and a past president of IIABA. The honor was presented to Evans during IIABA’s 27th Annual National Legislative Conference.
“Marietta has done an outstanding job in a short amount of time, by more than doubling her state’s fundraising totals and making Texas the national leader among state associations,” said William F. Hofmann III, chairman of the InsurPac Board of Trustees.
“Marietta was the organizing and driving force behind this tremendous improvement, and she has set the course for Texas to build on its 2003 successes, and be a national leader, for years to come.”
McCain founded the Luhn-McCain agency in 1983 after 15 years with its predecessor, Dunlap Insurance Agency, where she worked from 1968-83. She worked for John M. Coleman Insurance from 1962-68, and the insurance division of Gill Companies from 1958-62.
She is a past president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas, and also a past chairwoman of IIABA’s Membership Committee. She is a member of several professional advisory boards, as well as a number of business and charitable organizations in the San Antonio area.
“Marietta has had an outstanding career as an independent agent and a leader among her peers, both in the insurance industry and the small business community,” Hofmann said. “Her fundraising prowess will enable InsurPac to provide significant financial support during the critical 2004 elections to several outstanding political candidates who will work to advance the interests of independent agents and brokers.”
InsurPac raised the bar nationwide in 2003, breaking the previous year’s all-time record high for money raised in a single year. Independent agents and brokers throughout the country voluntarily contributed a record total of $617,497.05, a 36 percent increase over the 2002 total.
InsurPac is on pace to break its two-year record of $882,210.67 set in 2001-2002, a total which represented an increase of more than $200,000 over the previous election cycle.
InsurPac was established in 1975 to complement IIABA’s legislative programs. The largest PAC in the property/casualty insurance industry, InsurPac serves an important function for IIABA’s government affairs program by providing a cohesive voice for independent insurance agents and brokers in the nation’s capital.
