Auto Coverage Verification Measure Advances in Okla.

February 18, 2005

House Bill 1351, by Oklahoma State Rep. John Wright, R-Broken Arrow, would amend the state’s insurance law to require insurance policies to include the vehicle identification number of the vehicle or vehicles covered by a policy.

According to the House Media Services Division, Wright said the proposed law would provide “a real time indicator” as to whether a vehicle stopped by law enforcement is actually insured.

Although Oklahoma drivers must offer proof of insurance at the time of registration, many cancel that coverage shortly after obtaining insurance. HB 1351 directs the state Department of Public Safety to establish a secure Web site maintaining a directory of vehicle identification numbers that will be accessible to insurance carriers and law enforcement for verification of coverage.

The measure has passed out of committee and is awaiting a vote by the entire membership of the House.
