Texas Mid-Year Property/Casualty Symposium Set for July 12

The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) and the Association of Fire and Casualty Companies in Texas (AFACT) will present the 15th Annual 2007 Mid-Year Property & Casualty Insurance Symposium on July 12, in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Robert Hartwig, president and chief economist, Insurance Information Institute, will discuss the Texas market and compare it to other states and the country. Jay Thompson, an Austin insurance attorney and lobbyist for AFACT, will review the important insurance legislation that passed and failed during the 80th Legislature.

Wendy Baker, president of Lloyds America Inc., will share her company’s insights on climate change and the potential impact on the insurance industry.

The luncheon speaker will be Paul Burka, senior executive editor of Texas Monthly magazine, and the lead author of Texas Monthly’s “Ten Best, Ten Worst Legislators.” Burka will share his inside knowledge of the recently concluded legislative session and his views of the state’s political leadership.

An afternoon panel discussion led by ICT executive director Rick Gentry will include State Representative Larry Taylor, a member of the House Appropriations, Calendars and Insurance Committees and a key player in this session’s windstorm legislation; James Langford, assistant vice president of compliance, regulatory and government affairs, Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Companies and current chairman of the Insurance Council of Texas and the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association and the Texas FAIR Plan; Joe Woods, assistant vice president and regional manager, Property & Casualty Insurance Association of America; Robert “Bo” Gilbert, assistant vice president, government and industry affairs, USAA; and Lee Loftis, director of government affairs, Independent Insurance Agents of Texas.

The Texas Department of Insurance will offer up to five hours of continuing education credit and the State Bar of Texas will offer up to 2½ hours of CLE credit.
