Texas Higher Education Students Awarded Insurance Scholarships

November 20, 2008

The Insurance Council of Texas Education Foundation has awarded $28,000 in academic scholarships to 14 students of insurance at three universities in the state.

“This is the seventh year that we have awarded scholarships to university students who have expressed an interest in an insurance and risk management career,” said Mark Hanna, a spokesman for the Insurance Council of Texas. “The accomplishments that these young men and women have already made are truly amazing.”

ICT Education Foundation scholarships were awarded to University of North Texas students Rachel Alexander-Lindsey, Bryce Kearney, Jared Doughney, Raymond Tate and Rachel Somerford. Dr. Brenda Wells of North Texas said it’s not uncommon to find most of her students holding down full-time jobs while maintaining excellent grades.

The University of Texas at Austin scholarship recipients were Alyce Arnick, Shuo-Li Chuang, Callie Hanks and Amie Sun. Patricia Arnold, of the U.T. McCombs School of Business, remarked that her ICT scholarship recipients were extremely talented and had proven their abilities in previous internships and honors they had received.

Baylor University scholarship recipients were Tim Hartland, Ian Nelsen, Katherine Geyer, Gabriel Aulestia and Mitchell Hopper. Dr. Jim Garven, Frank S. Groner Memorial Chair of Finance, said many of his students have already lined up jobs in the insurance industry upon graduation.

University of North Texas student Rachel Somerford described what the ICT Education Foundation scholarship meant for her. “I have been funding myself through college for the past couple of years, so getting a scholarship means more than you know. It is so encouraging to me, as a student, to visibly see the industry’s support of my educational pursuit. I hope to utilize my Risk Management and Insurance Major in the insurance profession upon graduation,” Somerford said.

ICT’s scholarship program began in 2002 and to date, more than $200,000 in scholarships and academic funding has been awarded students and universities. The Insurance Council of Texas remains committed to helping students in higher education learn more of the intricacies of insurance through the financial assistance of scholarships such as these.
