Study: Barges Source of Volatile Organic Compounds in Miss. River

November 25, 2008

Preliminary results of a new study by a Louisiana state agency show Mississippi River barges could be a major source of ozone-causing volatile organic compounds.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality recently presented some of the findings in the study at the Air and Waste Management Association Louisiana Section meeting in Baton Rouge.

DEQ Administrator Bruce Hammatt said there could be as much as 500 tons of volatile organic compounds being released daily by river barges. By comparison, according to the 2007 Certified Totals of Criteria Pollutants for Louisiana report, ExxonMobil Refining in Baton Rouge reported releasing a total of 1,544 tons of VOCs for the entire year.

The study builds on work that started in 2005 when DEQ started using an infrared camera to detect volatile organic compounds.
