More than a third of Arkansas’ 75 counties have been declared eligible for federal public assistance after last month’s ice storm.
The Public Assistance Program reimburses local governments, state agencies and certain private nonprofit organizations 75 percent of their costs related to the storms. The costs include such improvements as debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repairs to roads, bridges, parks and public buildings.
Six counties recently were added to the program, bringing the total to 29, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said in a news release. The six are Cleburne, Conway, Crawford, Cross, Poinsett, and Randolph counties.
Previously declared eligible were Baxter, Benton, Boone, Carroll, Clay, Craighead, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Independence, Izard, Jackson, Johnson, Lawrence, Madison, Marion, Mississippi, Newton, Searcy, Sharp, Stone, Van Buren, and Washington counties.
The five-day winter storm that began Jan. 26 knocked out power to more than 350,000 homes and businesses and was blamed for the deaths of at least 13 people.
