Louisiana Agents See More Drivers Dropping Insurance

April 6, 2009

The Louisiana Workforce Commission said initial claims for unemployment insurance rose 3.4 percent for the week ending March 28 and remained at rates approaching double of those from a year ago. And amid these tough economic times insurance agents in the state say they’re noticing more and more drivers have dropped or significantly reduced their auto coverage.

Tommy Manzullo, a veteran agent with A-Ace Insurance, says he often calls clients to remind them to pay their premiums and most are giving the same excuse – they can’t afford it.

Louisiana’s auto insurance rates are among the highest in the country. But Manzullo says many of his clients can’t afford even the minimum liability coverage required – 10-20-10. That minimum rises in 2010 to 15-30-25.

Louisiana State Police say they’ve noticed a similar trend. In the nine-parish area around Baton Rouge, between January and April last year, troopers wrote 445 citations for no insurance. This year, they’ve already beat that number by 50.

Trooper Russell Graham says they catch most offenders during safety checkpoints.
