Oklahoma Traffic Fatalities Decline in June

Oklahoma Department of Public Safety officials report a decrease in traffic fatalities for the month of June 2010. Fatalities in June totaled 55 compared to 83 in the same month last year.

Eight motorcyclists and seven pedestrians died in crashes during June. The highest daily fatality numbers include 12 deaths on Sundays, and 10 on Tuesdays and Saturdays. There were five deathless days in the month of June.

Eight of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related, in the opinion of the investigating state, county or municipal officer. Forty-three fatality victims were Oklahoma residents and 12 were nonresidents. There were 42 male and 13 female victims.

Eight of the fatality victims were age 20 or under. There were 13 fatalities among 31-to 40 year-olds and 12 among 41-to 50 years-olds.

Grady, LeFlore, Noble and Texas Counties led the state in fatalities with three each, followed by Beckham, Canadian, Carter, Custer, Garfield, Lincoln, Oklahoma, Osage, Rogers, Stephens, and Tulsa Counties with two fatalities each.

Sixty-one percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash, according to DPS statistics.

The highest number of fatality crashes were on county roads.
