July 27, 2011

Two students interested in insurance-related studies have been selected for industry-backed scholarships in Louisiana.

Ian Williams of Jennings, La., and Lynden Lyles of Monroe, La., have been named as recipients of the 2011 Stephen W. Cavanaugh Scholarship. Each recipient will receive the $8,000 scholarship over a four-year period.

Louisiana Workers’ Compensation Corporation (LWCC) established the Stephen W. Cavanaugh Scholarship Fund in 2006 in honor of Cavanaugh’s leadership and lasting contributions to the insurance industry in Louisiana. He was LWCC’s chief executive officer from the company’s inception in 1992 until 2006, the year he died.

Williams was an active member in the Leo Club, Key Club, Science Club, English Club, and 4-H Club at Jennings High School. He plans to major in Insurance and Risk Management at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Lyles majors in Risk Management and Insurance at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Gamma Iota Sigma, Kappa Delta Sorority, Emerging Scholars, and the Maroon Platoon. In her spare time, she tutors at the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home.

The scholarship fund, administered by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, provides financial assistance to deserving Louisiana students who are majoring in an insurance-related field at a Louisiana university, college, or community college. Applicants must submit academic transcripts, a statement about their career plans in the insurance industry, and a letter of recommendation from a teacher or professor.

Many generous donors have contributed to the fund. The founding donors include Louisiana Workers’ Compensation Corp.; Aubrey T. Temple Jr.; Community Foundation of Acadiana; Dwight Andrus Insurance Agency; Guy Carpenter & Company LLC; Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of Louisiana; Knox Insurance Group LLC; LUBA Casualty Insurance Company; Star Service Inc.; and Wright & Percy Insurance.
