6th Death Due to Oklahoma Tornado Is Confirmed

April 17, 2012

Woodward County (Oklahoma) Emergency Management Director Matt Lehenbauer says a sixth person has died as a result of injuries suffered in a deadly tornado.

Lehenbauer say the man died on the night of April 15 in an Amarillo, Texas, hospital where he was taken following the early morning twister that hit Woodward. The man’s name and age were not released.

Two men and three children were also killed in the EF-3 tornado that was part of a storm system that stretched from Texas to Minnesota and spawned more than 120 twisters.

Lehenbauer also says some Woodward residents are sleeping in their yards. He says some can’t afford a hotel while others just want to keep an eye on their property.

The Red Cross has opened a shelter at Living Word Fellowship Church.

Significant tornado damage has been reported in Woodward, around 140 miles northwest of Oklahoma City, according to catastrophe modeling firm RMS. Emergency management officials are reporting damage to 89 homes and 13 businesses, predominantly in the western part of the city, though damage has also been reported in the north of the city, RMS said. A lightning strike affected the tornado notification system, when damage to a tower occurred.
