Drought Not Over, Arkansas Ranchers Cautioned

October 29, 2012

Arkansas agriculture officials say recent rains and the greening of pastures aren’t true indications that the drought is over.

The drought was particularly hard on cattle producers, many of whom sold more head than they had planned and are looking at rebuilding their herds.

The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture says pond and stream levels are still very low and it will take more time — and rain — to replenish those resources.

Officials suggest that ranchers start planning to rebuild their herds but they have to be mindful of whether they have enough forage and have to consider that 2013 could bring another dry summer.
