Most municipal recovery projects in Galveston in the wake of Hurricane Ike have been finished in the eight years since the storm battered the island.
Ike made landfall in Galveston on Sept. 13, 2008.
The Galveston County Daily News reported that city officials say their list of hurricane recovery projects is almost complete.
Records show 518 disaster recovery projects in Galveston were funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Only 16 remain under construction or are otherwise unfinished. The newspaper reports the completed projects total more than $95 million in work.
Galveston’s new $75 million wastewater plant was substantially completed in March. A valve in one of the plants tanks failed last month, allowing more than 100,000 gallons of partially treated sludge to reach Galveston Bay.
