Texas Insurance Dept. Earns National Award for Support of Guard, Reserve Employees

June 29, 2018

The Texas Department of Insurance is one of 15 employers across the nation to earn the 2018 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest honor given for support of National Guard and Reserve employees.

TDI reported it was selected from more than 2,300 nominations.

“A life of service is something to be respected and supported,” Insurance Commissioner Kent C. Sullivan said. “As an employer, we get back even more in return because of the skills and experiences these men and women bring to our agency.”

Nominations come from Guard or Reserve members employed by the organization. TDI fraud prosecutor Kyson Johnson nominated the agency.

“As a reserve soldier, being mobilized or deployed away from home presents all kinds of challenges,” Johnson said. “TDI always had my back, ensuring I could focus on my Army mission without anxiety about my civilian work.”

Freedom Award recipients were announced this week by Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis.

“Our National Guard and Reserve members are a vital part of our defense strategy and deserve as much support as this country can provide,” Mattis said. “These 15 employers lead the way in providing that. We are grateful to them for their role in helping to keep our nation safe and secure.”

The awards will be formally presented during an August 24 ceremony at the Pentagon.
