Flooded Streets, Tornadoes Reported in Louisiana

Authorities in Louisiana are investigating reports of a possible tornado damage in the Baton Rouge area.

The Advocate reports one home was severely damaged by a possible tornado in the community of Central. Baton Rouge television stations reported a possible tornado in the city limits. No injuries were reported.

The Thursday morning windstorms came as heavy rains flooded streets. The state transportation department said some low-lying roads and underpasses were closed as parts of south Louisiana were under a flash flood warning. There were numerous reports of flooded cars in Baton Rouge and Lafayette.

At the state Capitol, the Louisiana House and Senate both started late because of the weather on the final day of the 2019 legislative session.

According to Accuweather, there were four reported tornadoes touching down in Louisiana as par to the storm system that hit the south central U.S. on Wednesday and Thursday.

High rainfall amounts were reported across southeast Texas and southern Louisiana. Accuweather reported a 24-hour total for Lafayette, Louisiana of 7.69 inches.

At least one death was attributed to flooding in Baton Rouge when a man tried but failed to escape his vehicle that had been swamped in the deluge, according to media reports.
