A new report from the Texas Department of State Health Services confirms a final death count from the February 2021 Winter Storm Uri and the subsequent collapse of the Texas electric power grid.
The DHS reports 246 winter storm-related deaths across 77 Texas counties, a revision from the previously reported death toll of 210.
161 deaths were extreme cold exposure-related injuries from hypothermia. Most people (125) who died from hypothermia were aged 60 or older.
25 people deaths were from exacerbation of pre-existing illness, such as disruptions to dialysis or oxygen treatment.
Hazardous road conditions resulted in 22 fatalities, while 19 people died of fatal carbon monoxide poisonings. 10 deaths were fire-related injuries, and nine were from trauma or fractures sustained during falls and slips on ice, a fall-through ice resulting in drowning, and injury complications that developed after a fall.
Harris County, home to Houston, had 44 winter storm-related deaths, the most of any county. 161 of the deaths were male and 147 were aged 60 or older.
