Louisiana Fortify Homes Program Opens Second Round of Grants

October 18, 2023

The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program (LFHP) opened its second round of grants this week.

Homeowners must have a policy with Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation to apply for one of 1,000 grants available in the second round. Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

The 500 grants that were available in the first round were awarded in two minutes, the Louisiana Department of Insurance said. Approximately 1,000 grants are available for the second round, which opened October 16.

Another 1,500 grants will be available to all eligible homeowners at the conclusion of the second round.

“Based on how quickly the first round of grants were taken and how many calls we’ve received about the Fortify Homes Program, it’s safe to say Louisianans understand the vital importance of building stronger,” said Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon. “In light of the interest in this program and our new laws requiring insurers to offer Fortify discounts and policy endorsements, I’m confident homeowners will soon begin to see a more stable property insurance market in south Louisiana.”

The program will provide grants of up to $10,000 for homeowners to repair or replace their roofs to the FORTIFIED Roof™ standard of the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). Those interested in the program are encouraged to review eligibility information and frequently asked questions on the LFHP website to determine whether their home meets the requirements for the program.

The grant will cover the cost of reinforcing a roof using methods that meet or exceed the FORTIFIED Roof™ standard, which includes strengthening a building against severe storms, high winds and wind driven rain. Homeowners must meet eligibility requirements and pay all costs for the roof upgrade including permits, inspections and construction costs beyond the amount of the grant.
