Texas Faces New Heat Advisories With Temperatures Above 100F

June 4, 2024

Parts of Texas and the western US are being warned of high temperatures on Tuesday, putting electric grids to the test as residents turn to air conditioning to stay cool.

Heat advisories are up across central and southern Texas from early Tuesday afternoon to nightfall. San Antonio’s high should reach 101F (38C), while Austin is expected to see 96F. It will feel closer to 112F in both cities when humidity is factored in. “Take extra precautions when outside,” the National Weather Service said.

The heat — which is unseasonable for early June — is part of a larger system that has been wilting Mexico for the last few weeks.

High temperatures are also searing down across California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah, where excessive heat warnings are posted. Sacramento and Stockton’s highs are forecast to hit 101F, while Modesto is set to reach 100F.

Meanwhile, there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms, winds, and hail across parts of eastern Texas and Oklahoma, as well as portions of Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi, the US Storm Prediction Center said.

In addition, a large area from the mid-Missouri River Valley to Minnesota faces risk of large hail and severe wind gusts, forecasters at the center wrote in an outlook.
