Former Texas Insurance Broker Charged in Alleged Scam

April 17, 2025

A former Friendswood, Texas insurance agent turned himself into authorities last week over charges that he fraudulently brokered insurance policies, the Friendswood Police Department announced.

Edgar Peralta of Edgar Peralta with Peralta Insurance Brokerage LLC, is charged with theft, a state jail felony, through the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.

Friendswood PD received a report on March 3, 2025 in regards to possible theft/fraud involving an insurance scam. The victim advised that they had been using an insurance broker, Peralta, for several years to purchase their homeowner, auto, and flood insurance.

The victim stated it was recommended in May of 2024 to pre-purchasing these policies for the upcoming year, and the agent would be able to save them a great deal of money, FPD said.

After a traffic stop in January 2025, it was discovered that the insurance policy on the vehicle was not valid. The victim said they contacted the insurance company and verified the auto policy had been cancelled due to non-payment of the premiums. It was also discovered that the homeowners and flood insurance policies were also cancelled for non-payment.

The victim said they had records of sending wired payments to Peralta for the policies, which he was supposed to have paid. The victim alleges the money was never sent to the insurance companies, according to the police department.

The victim said they then discovered that Peralta’s state license to sell insurance had been revoked/cancelled in June of 2024, and he was continuing to attempt to fraudulently broker insurance policies. Peralta turned himself in on April 10.

Friendswood PD has also reported this incident to the Texas Department of Insurance, and they are conducting their own investigation into the matter and the suspect could face further criminal charges.
