Csiszar Reappointed as S. C. Director of Insurance

Governor-Elect Mark Sanford reappointed Ernst N. Csiszar as the South Carolina Director of Insurance. Csiszar was originally appointed as the Director of Insurance in 1999 under Governor Hodges’ Administration.

Over the past four years as Director of Insurance, Csiszar has built a reputation both nationally and internationally as an industry leader. He was recently elected Secretary-Treasurer for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), a voluntary organization of the chief insurance regulatory officials of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and four U.S. territories. Csiszar also serves as the chair of the International Insurance Relations Committee and vice chair of the Race-Based Premium Working Group for the NAIC. He is a NAIC representative to the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) and chairman of the IAIS Subcommittee on Securitization. He also serves as a member of that organization’s Reinsurance Committee.

Additionally, he has represented the NAIC on a variety of development initiatives at the request of the United States Department of Commerce and the United Agency for International Development.

Governor-Elect Sanford credited Csiszar with the development of the captives industry in South Carolina. He added, that the insurance industry offered a unique opportunity for further economic development efforts in the state. He also asked Csiszar to focus on lowering the cost of insurance to South Carolinians and to utilize insurance so that South Carolina will be more competitive in growing small business.

Originally from Romania, Director Csiszar immigrated to Canada in 1966. He earned his bachelor of law degree from the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada.

Prior to his appointment as Director, Csiszar served as the president and chief executive officer of Seibels Bruce Group Inc. of Columbia, S.C., from 1995 to 1998. He was a visiting professor at the School of Business at the University of South Carolina from 1993 to 1995. He also served as managing co-director of the European investment-banking firm Holborn Holdings Corporation in Geneva, Switzerland, from 1979 to 1988.
