December 30, 2004

The Kentucky Insurance Commission estimates damages of from $400,000 to $500,000 in losses due to last week’s winter storms and warmer temperatures this week.

An unusual amount of snow and ice, high winds and inclement weather encountered last week in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and North Carolina have resulted in a landslide of weather-related insurance claims. A lot of claims were related to building roofs collapsing under the weight of snow and ice.

This week the snow and ice are thawing, triggering building damage claims that like flooded basements and roof damage that occurs when packed snow and ice melts, water becomes damed up on the roof is forced under shingles. A lot of damage is being caused by melting ice falling from roofs and damaging cars parked nearby.

A lot of automobile claims resulted from poor road conditions causing accidents, but more claims were due to body damage sustained from falling ice-coated tree limbs. Now that the weather is getting warmer damage claims are expected to increase due to melting ice and snow.
