Lloyd’s Celebrates 20 Years of Support to Univ. of Ky. Veterinary Science Department

April 21, 2005

Lloyd’s of London is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a supporter of the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Since the mid-1980s, Lloyd’s of London underwriters, brokers and their Kentucky agents have given more than $640,000 for research and other activities of the Department of Veterinary Science.

“Over the past 20 years, the Lloyd’s market has donated to the Department of Veterinary Science and we have been delighted to do so,” said Julian Lloyd, chairman of Lloyd’s Livestock Committee and Bloodstock Underwriter at Hiscox. “Lloyd’s is the preeminent insurer of bloodstock and we insure some of the most interesting and valuable equine risks in the world. We are committed to supporting equine research and to providing the insurance cover to meet client needs worldwide.”

Continuing the tradition, Lloyd’s presented a $40,000 check for continued support of The Equine Disease Quarterly, which recently celebrated its 50th issue. The award-winning publication provides timely research-based reports to the horse industry worldwide.

“We are delighted to continue our long-standing support of the fund and consider it to be a hugely worthwhile investment in helping develop and support new veterinary talent which clearly benefits the whole industry in which we and our clients work,” said Chris Williamson, managing director of Hughes-Gibb, the Bloodstock Insurance Broking Department of Willis Ltd.

Each year, Lloyd’s representatives arrange a meeting in Kentucky and present the check. The attending Lloyd’s underwriter and association president make a joint presentation of $40,000.

“This marks the 20th year of the Lloyd’s Grant to the University of Kentucky, plus 10 yearly $1000 bursaries to final year veterinarian students at various veterinary universities around the United States,” Shack Parrish, Clay Ward Agency president said.

“The idea for the grant and bursaries was formulated by Lloyd’s Kentucky agents, Dave Parrish (Clay Ward), Blair Scott ( Scott Company), Lloyd’s Livestock underwriter, David Chambers, Lloyd’s Broker, Roger Barklam (Hughes-Gibb) and Jack Bryans, Department of Veterinary Science chairman, University of Kentucky in the spring-summer of 1985. The research programs and The Equine Disease Quarterly supported by the yearly grants have been greatly beneficial to the thoroughbred equine community and hopefully will continue for many years.”

“Disease monitoring and reporting have never been as important as they are today and The Equine Disease Quarterly has proven extremely valuable in disseminating information on equine diseases to horse industries worldwide,” Peter Timoney, U.K. Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center department chair and director explained.

Lloyd’s of London is a 317 year-old institution whose members underwrite risk in return for premiums and investment income. They are recognized as the world’s largest thoroughbred horse insurer and, as such, remain committed both to supporting equine research and providing the insurance cover essential to the well being and prosperity of Bloodstock interests worldwide.
