Hurricane Center Watching Tropical Storm Emily

July 12, 2005

Tropical Storm Emily, the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, developed late on Monday but was still far out in the ocean and several days away from posing a threat to any inhabited areas.

Emily, given tropical storm status once it developed winds of more than 40 mph, followed hot on the heels of Hurricane Dennis, which rampaged through the Caribbean and then slammed into the United States Gulf Coast on Sunday.

Emily was located in the Atlantic Ocean 1 600km east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles, the long chain of islands that curves around the eastern end of the Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center said.
