Ala.: Bank Wants County to Buy $1M Insurance Policy for Cobb Marker

January 9, 2008

Wachovia Bank officials are concerned that a proposed sign to mark Hall of Fame baseball player Ty Cobb’s time in Anniston, Ala., may obstruct the view of motorists.

Calhoun County Commissioner Eli Henderson, who proposed putting the marker near the site of a boarding house where Cobb stayed in 1904, said the bank wanted the county to sign a no-fault clause and take out a $1 million insurance policy in case the marker contributes to any car accidents.

Henderson told The Anniston Star in a story Monday that the sign, at the intersection of Quintard Avenue and 10th Street, now will be posted on city land a few feet away from the original site in a less obstructive location.

Wachovia spokeswoman Evelyn Mitchell said Monday she was not familiar with the new proposal and had no immediate comment.

The bank has been discussing the matter with the city for months and had presented a standard licensing agreement, according to Mitchell.

Cobb stayed in a boarding house at 10th Street and Quintard Avenue when he became a star with the minor league team in Anniston before eventually joining the Detroit Tigers and winning 12 batting titles.

Henderson said he plans to have the marker up by March or April.
