Insurance Policies Among Unclaimed Property in West Virginia

July 25, 2008

Unlike years past, there are no diamond rings or South African gold coins in West Virginia’s cache of unclaimed property.

But State Treasurer John Perdue does have cash, stock shares and unclaimed insurance policies for about 12,000 people.

Each year the state tries to locate the rightful owners of property often left behind in safe deposit boxes.

Perdue spokesman Nelson Sorah says the state has returned $60 million worth of property since 1997.

Word is spread through newspapers, brochures and the Internet, but eventually, some items end up being sold.

One year, the state auctioned off a Ziploc bag of teeth for $3 or $4.
