Alabama Updates Licensing Process for Insurance Professionals

August 11, 2008

Since the beginning of Alabama Gov. Bob Riley’s administration, Insurance Commissioner Walter A. Bell said it has been the Department’s goal to streamline insurance regulation and to reduce red tape.

“From the day I started as commissioner, I wanted this department to see where technology could take us” Bell said.

A new system, which will be accessible at the Department’s Web site, (www.aldoi.gov) will go online Sept. 29, according to the commissioner.

“On September 17, the old system will be taken down, which means for those intervening days, there will be no ability to renew licenses online,” Bell said. “Thus, to ensure timely renewal and avoid possible problems with the new system, all licensees renewing in September are urged to do so prior to Sept. 16.”

It started with additional locations for the licensing examination. It continued with the ability to renew licenses online. It grew yet again with the ability to print a license online, Bell said.

“Our partnership with SBS (State Based Systems) is the next logical step toward a Department of Insurance that is real-time and as paperless as possible,” Bell said. “The ALDOI/SBS partnership will provide producers the opportunity to track their continuing education credits and give personal access to their producer data.”

Instead of calling the Department to verify continuing education credits, producers will be able to do it from the comfort of their own office or home computer.

From the standpoint of an agency head, reducing paper means fewer costs to the Department and ultimately to the taxpayer, Bell noted.

“It will help us continue to reduce our costs for paper and for the personnel hours to manage the paper,” the commissioner said. “It will continue to allow us to realign our Department toward a more consumer services approach, rather than data management.”

There are nominal fees associated with the new system that will pay for SBS’ services, Bell said. A producer can access his or her records online for $5.95 per year. Continuing education providers will pay $1 per credit hour per producer for filing CE credits online. This is a common charge found in most states, he added.
