Georgia Commissioner Offers Advice in Wake of Recent Flash Flooding

August 7, 2013

With confirmed flash flooding in northern Georgia from torrential rain, Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens is reminding homeowners that policies for mobile or manufactured homes may include coverage for flood damage, unlike standard home policies.

Owners of traditional site-built homes can purchase federal flood coverage in addition to a standard homeowners policy. However, their community must participate in the federal National Flood Insurance Program. A community cannot be covered unless it has joined the program. Flood damage to automobiles is covered under the comprehensive portion of an auto policy.

Commissioner Hudgens recommends that victims of recent storms take the following steps to ensure protection of their property:

• Homeowners should contact their insurance agents immediately if there is damage. Do not delay.

• Try to make a list of all the property and valuables that were damaged or destroyed.

• Secure the property by covering the affected area with a tarp or plywood to protect against further damage.

• Begin the drying-out process by opening windows and using large fans and dehumidifiers. However, do not use the air-conditioner, which can spread mold spores.

• Begin the cleanup as soon as practical, either personally or by contacting a professional. Be sure to get any wet carpet out of the house, including the padding. Mold will start quickly in warm humid conditions. Use a solution of bleach and water to clean and disinfect flooded areas.

• For homeowners who have flood insurance, they should document the damage to substantiate the claim. Make sure to take photos. Coordinate with the insurance agent to get a restoration company to dry, clean and decontaminate everything affected.

Commissioner Hudgens said any Georgia residents with questions about homeowners or other types of insurance can call the consumer services division at 404-656-2070, or toll free at 1-800-656-2298. Phone lines are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
