Gulf Shrimper Pleads Guilty to Defrauding Oil Spill Claims Fund

November 13, 2013

A Mississippi man has pleaded guilty to a fraud charge involving $36,300 he received in oil-spill recovery money.

The Sun Herald reported that Joseph Anthony Clements will be sentenced Jan. 30 in federal court in Gulfport.

Prosecutors say Clements received a check for $36,300 by making false statements that he lost money from his shrimping and fishing business. Clements’ indictment said his claim included documents of seafood sales and other paperwork that misrepresented the facts.

The indictment said Clements committed fraud three times in Harrison and Jackson counties between November 2010 and April 2011 while receiving a check and sending related paperwork to the Gulf Coast Claims Facility.

Clements pleaded guilty Nov. 5.

U.S. District Judge Sul Ozerden has allowed Clements to remain free on bond pending sentencing.
