A federal lawsuit filed in April 2014 on behalf of 39 current or former Jackson, Miss. Police Department officers will be settled. That’s according to the attorney representing the plaintiffs.
The Clarion-Ledger reports the Jackson City Council will pay $73,000 to settle a lawsuit stemming from a 2011 U.S. Department of Labor investigation that took place after multiple officers complained that they were being forced to work overtime without proper pay.
The department investigation resulted in finding that 255 police officers, over half the police force, were owed money. The city maintained that the officers could only recover compensatory time, not monetary payment.
The city settled with a different group of officers last year in the amount of $177,500 after a similar lawsuit stemming from the same investigation.
