Miami Dade College Reaches $33.5M Settlement in Fatal Parking Garage Collapse

May 14, 2015

A settlement has been reached in the case involving a collapsed parking garage at Miami Dade College.

The Miami Herald reports the college reached a $33.5 million settlement with the contractor and subcontractors hired to build the garage at the Doral campus.

The parking garage collapsed during construction in October 2012, killing four people and injuring seven others.

Juan Mendieta, a spokesman for the college, says the settlement will allow for the demolition of the old structure and the construction of a new, safe parking garage.

Crews are clearing the last of the rubble and construction is expected to begin soon. It will take about 18 months.

As part of the settlement, the college received $26.5 million. The $7 million the school owed the contractors for the garage was waived.
