Alabama’s Oldest Mill Appears to be Total Loss After Fire

October 20, 2016

One of the oldest mills in the state has burned to the ground.

Butler’s Mill, which was operational as recently as 2015, caught fire Monday. The building appears to be a total loss.

AL.com reports Butler’s Mill was originally built on the banks of the Tallapoosa River in the early 1800s. New owners renovated the building and reopened it as a restaurant earlier this year in Graham, a few miles east of Wedowee.

According to a post on the Butler’s Mill Facebook page, all three of the building’s mills caught fire.

The post says, “Our hearts are shattered and we feel as though this is like death. A loss you cannot get back in no way, form, or size. A loss to our community, children, friends, and family.”
