Two Arrested in Homemade Bombing of Georgia Woman’s Home

Georgia authorities have arrested two men, a month after a homemade bomb destroyed part of a home near Savannah.

Caleb Kinsey, 33, and Stephen Glosser, 36, were apprehended last week after an investigation into the bombing at the Richmond Hill home of a woman who had recently moved there, the Georgia insurance and fire commissioner’s office said. Authorities did not provide a motive for the attack but the Bryan County sheriff said that suspects knew the victim, according to local news reports.

The bomb was described as a “binary explosive compound.” That type of material can include ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, similar to what was used in the truck bomb that blew up the federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995, killing 168 people.

The Richmond Hill detonation, on Jan. 13, blew the bricks off of the garage section of the house and heavily damaged the roof and walls. The homeowner, Larissa Apperson, was in the house at the time but was well away from the blast site, WSAV TV news reported.

“I’ve never seen anything like this – period,” Bryan County Sheriff Mark Crowe told the news outlet in January. “Twenty-six years of being in law enforcement and this is a very first.”

As the investigation closed in, Kinsey fled but was later found in Louisiana, the Georgia insurance commissioner said. Glosser was arrested in Georgia. Kinsey has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Glosser is charged with transporting and receiving explosives.

The men were in jail as of Sunday, and are expected to be indicted by a grand jury next month, authorities said. The insurance commissioner’s office did not have further information on a possible motive, or if the home was insured.

The office also announced a new online portal for reporting suspected insurance fraud.

“The Coplogic Desk Officer Reporting System through Lexis Nexis offers a streamlined process for filing a complaint directly to our office,” Commissoner John King said in a statement.

Complaints will be reviewed by the investigations department to see if further examination is required.
