Kentucky DOI Hosts Virtual Session on Local Government Premium Taxes

May 12, 2023

The Kentucky Department of Insurance will hold a virtual meeting Monday to discuss changes to local government premium taxes due to take effect later this year.

Kentucky law allows cities and counties to set taxes or fees on some types of insurance premiums each year, and requires the state insurance commissioner to notify insurers of the taxes at least 85 days before they become effective, the department said in a bulletin.

The taxes do not apply to group health, workers’ compensation, federal flood insurance, captive or domestic life insurance. The meeting may answer questions about how to determine the location for liability and to which jurisdiction the tax is owed, the bulletin noted.

The online meeting will be held through the Microsoft Teams platform and is set to begin at 1 p.m. Eastern time. Participants can click here to join the meeting. The meeting ID is 283 544 886 277 and the passcode is mchn97.

Stakeholders may also join by phone by calling +1 502-632-6289,,272536446#. The phone conference ID is: 272 536 446#.
