Don’t Forget About Continuing Ed for Transportation Insurance Professionals

August 15, 2023

In the fast-paced and ever-changing world of insurance, staying up-to-date with industry trends, regulations, and best practices is paramount. For insurance professionals serving the transportation industry, this is even more crucial due to the sector’s unique challenges and complexities. That’s where the Motor Carrier Insurance Education Foundation (MCIEF) steps in, as a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing education to insurance professionals in the field.

Founded in 2013 by Tommy Ruke, MCIEF has humble beginnings rooted in Tommy’s personal experiences and passion for education. Growing up in a family involved in the trucking business, he developed a deep understanding of the transportation industry’s intricacies. After pursuing a career as an insurance agent and earning his certified insurance counselor (CIC) designation, Tommy recognized the need to share his knowledge with others in the field.

MCIEF’s journey began with the establishment of the transportation risk specialist (TRS) designation – a premier trucking insurance educational achievement that was the first of its kind to be recognized by the transportation insurance industry. Over the years, MCIEF expanded its offerings, providing a range of education and networking opportunities for insurance professionals involved in transportation. The curriculum currently covers various topics, including operations, government oversight, risk management, and the specific insurance needs of the trucking sector.

One of the keys to success in the insurance industry is continuous learning, and MCIEF has sought to recognize this. The organization has developed a number of educational programs, including the upcoming launch of the transportation claims specialist (TCS) designation, a best-in-class trucking claims curriculum. These designations demonstrate a professional’s commitment to staying informed and ensuring service to their clients.

MCIEF’s commitment to education has seen significant growth over the years, from its initial conference in 2013 to hosting the largest Western Conference to date in 2023. During the pandemic, MCIEF transitioned to virtual events – reaching a broader audience and making education accessible remotely.

As the industry evolves, MCIEF, based in Fort Myers, Florida, remains steadfast in its mission to provide quality educational content for insurance professionals. The organization offers an average of 25 different rotating education programs, catering to the diverse needs of students across the United States and beyond.

With Ruke still actively leading the company, MCIEF shows no signs of slowing down. As founder and a well-respected figure in the industry, Tommy’s commitment to education remains unwavering. When asked about retirement, he humorously responds that he’ll retire when people stop seeking his expertise.

For insurance professionals serving the transportation industry, staying informed and continuously improving their knowledge is crucial for success.
