Assemblyman Thomas M. Calderon, chair of the Assembly Committee on Insurance, submitted Declaration of Intent paperwork to the Secretary of State’s office Nov. 2, formalizing his candidacy for California’s Insurance Commissioner.
Calderon was expected to file nomination signatures yesterday.
Calderon, who is a frontrunner in the race, has raised well over $1 million in campaign contributions and has obtained support from a broad coalition of backers, including California’s elected leadership, labor unions, law enforcement, and both industry and consumer advocates.
Support behind Calderon includes Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante; Senate President Pro Tem John Burton; former Speaker of the Assembly, San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown; Speaker Emeritus Antonio Villaraigosa; and hundreds of elected officials throughout the State.
