SEIU Endorses Calderon for Insurance Commissioner

December 19, 2001

Assembly Insurance Chair Thomas M. Calderon won the support of the California State Council of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in his bid to win next year’s California Insurance Commissioner race.

Labeling him “a strong advocate for workers and their families” who will “protect us as consumers,” (SEIU) has said it will back Calderon.

Calderon expressed the importance of the support to him, noting that the backing comes from the working men and women of California. “They are the backbone of our economy and I am honored that they trust me to protect the interests of California’s consumers as the State’s next Insurance Commissioner.”

SEIU represents more than 350,000 working men and women in California and also represent a significant voting block within the California Democratic Party.

Highlighting two of Calderon’s bills from this legislative session-AB 616, which increased PERS retirement benefits, and SB 71, which increased workers’ compensation benefits-SEIU President Annelle Grajeda complimented Calderon for his work on behalf of consumers during his tenure in the Legislature.

“You have been more than just an ‘Aye’ vote.

You have been a strong advocate for SEIU,” Grajeda commented. “You speak on behalf of our bills on the Assembly Floor. You walk picket lines. You come to the table on our side in negotiations. You demonstrate the kind of leadership SEIU wants from all elected officials.”
