IBA West Endorses Calderon for Calif. Insurance Commissioner

December 28, 2001

The largest trade association in the Pacific West representing independent agents and insurance brokers–which employ more than 15,000 insurance professionals and insure millions of Californians–recently announced its endorsement of Thomas Calderon for California Insurance Commissioner.

“Our organization does not make recommendations often, and they don’t come lightly,” said IBA West President Don Way. “It’s not often such a strong, knowledgeable leader and electable candidate emerges.

“In his years as a leading member of the Assembly Moderate Democratic Caucus, Calderon demonstrated a well- reasoned, balanced approach to state government and has established a well deserved reputation as a fair and honest person,” Way said. “More, he has proven his ability to attract and build a broad base of support and personally sought out independent agents and insurance brokers to support his efforts to gain the office.”

Way said the endorsement comes in recognition of Calderon’s strong commitment to, and understanding of, the importance of independent insurance agents and insurance brokers in the insurance delivery process.

“As Chair of the Assembly Insurance Committee he led efforts beneficial to agents and brokers, including supporting licensing reform, opposing punitive anti-business legislation that would have undermined confidential settlements, and opposing measures to increase regulatory burdens to comply with the federal Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.”

Calderon will address the IBA West membership during the 2001 Installation of Officers and General Meeting Jan. 23 in Los Angeles.
