Alliance Hosts 81st Annual Meeting in Calif. April 27-29

March 10, 2003

“Corporate Ethics and the Public Trust” will be the topic of the keynote speech by former Secretary of Education and Drug Czar William Bennett at the Annual Meeting of the Alliance of American Insurers.

The Alliance’s 81st Annual Meeting will be held April 27-29 at the Four
Seasons Resort Aviara in Carlsbad, Calif.

Bennett says “capitalism requires leaders with moral and ethical tethers. Our economic system rests on trust. Ethical behavior, then, is an intrinsic part of the bottom line.”

“In light of the Enron situation last year, and increased oversight at the federal and state levels, it is only appropriate that we call upon
someone with Dr. Bennett’s credentials to address the ethics issue before a group of insurance company CEOs who must practice and lead companies with the highest ethical standards,” said Alliance president Rodger S. Lawson, Ph.D.

Former Presidential Advisor David Gergen will be the featured political keynote speaker at the meeting. Gergen, a frequent guest on television news programs, was an advisor to Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton.

The Annual Meeting also will feature a discussion of tort reform as viewed by a panel of judges. The panel, moderated by Brooklyn Law School professor Anthony J. Sebok, will feature Paul Niemeyer, Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit; William W
Schwarzer, Senior U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of
California; Stephen Markman, Michigan Supreme Court Justice; and Jess Dickinson, who was elected in Nov. 2002 to the Mississippi Supreme Court. His term begins in January 2004.

NAIC president Mike Pickens, who is Arkansas’ Insurance Commissioner, will head a panel discussing the growing debate over the merits of the current state regulatory system versus federal insurance regulation. Joining Pickens will be Jeff Post, president and CEO of Fireman’s FundĀ® Insurance Company, and Steve Bartlett, president and CEO of the Financial Services Roundtable.
