Calif. Workers’ Comp Community Mourns Loss of Alan Tebb

April 2, 2003

Alan Tebb, former general manager of the California Workers’ Compensation Institute, the research and education arm of the California workers’ compensation industry, passed away March 31 following a brief illness. He was 74.

Tebb began his 40-year career as branch manager of the Western Insurance Information Service in Portland, Oregon, and later became Executive Secretary of the Oregon Insurance Agents’ Association. While in Oregon, he was active in the campaign that modernized the state’s workers’ compensation law and served on the commission that codified the state insurance code, and in 1965 he was awarded the Eppstein Award as “man of the year.” Prior to being named CWCI’s first full-time manager in 1969, he was President of Compensation Advisors, Inc., a Seattle-based industrial relations firm.

During his 24-year tenure at CWCI, Tebb established himself as a recognized authority on California workers’ compensation, providing effective leadership and an articulate voice in a complex field. His expertise, wit, and ability to translate the intricacies of workers’ compensation into plain English made him a popular industry spokesman, and he worked extensively with the news media, provided expert testimony before state legislatures and Congress, and spoke at workers’ compensation conferences and forums throughout North America. In 1984, he was honored with the President’s Award of the International Association of Accident Boards and Commissions for his continued efforts toward the refinement of workers’ compensation laws and procedures throughout the world. Following his retirement from CWCI in 1994, he continued to put his wealth of workers’ compensation knowledge and experience to good use as a consultant to several insurers and as special California workers’ compensation counsel for the American Insurance Association.

Tebb is survived by his wife Marge; his son and daughter-in-law Michael and Joann Tebb of Alamo and grandsons Mike and Zac; his daughter and son-in-law Julie and Mark Bishop of Concord and his grandson Matthew; his daughter Janie Tebb of San Ramon and her fiancé, Chris Peeters. A private family service has been planned; and CWCI plans to hold a public memorial in the next few weeks (arrangements pending). The family suggests that memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Contra Costa County, 2051 Harrison St., Concord, CA 94520; or to the American Cancer Society (1-800-ACS-2345).
