Vernon Stoner, a former deputy chief executive officer for Sound Transit and formerly the city manager in Vancouver and Lacey, has been named deputy director for operations at the Washington Department of Labor and Industries (L&I).
The deputy director position has been vacant since L&I Director Judy Schurke was promoted from the position in October to be acting director of L&I and then, in March, to be L&I’s permanent director. The deputy position is responsible for the agency’s administrative services division, information services program, human resources office and management consulting program.
Stoner most recently has been administrator for L&I’s Region 3 in Tacoma, Wash., a position he has held since August 2006. He formerly served for five years as deputy CEO with Sound Transit in Seattle. He was city manager in Vancouver, Wash., from 1996 to 2000; commissioner of the Washington State Employment Security Department from 1991 to 1996; city manager in Saginaw, Mich., from 1987 to 1991; and city manager in Lacey from 1981 to 1987.
