Surplus Lines’ McKay Named to IICF Western Board of Directors

August 14, 2013

Surplus Line Association of California Executive Director Benjamin J. McKay was named to the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation’s Western division board of directors.

The IICF board is comprised of industry professionals with commitment to philanthropy.

McKay joined SLA in 2012 following eight years with the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America as senior vice president for federal government relations. Prior to PCI, McKay was a chief of staff for a Congressman, and before that he was a staffer to several members of the Florida legislature, where he worked on insurance issues. He also served for a time as a regulator at the Florida Department of State, where he was deputy secretary for international and legislative affairs and eventually chief of staff for the department.

San Francisco-based SLA operates as a self-governed private organization. The group serves as the statutory surplus line advisory organization to the California Department of Insurance and facilitates the state’s capacity to monitor and direct surplus line brokers’ placements of insurance with eligible non-admitted insurers.

IICF is directed and funded by the insurance industry. Since its inception in 1994, IICF has contributed more than $20 million in grants to charities and 166,000 volunteer hours to hundreds of community nonprofit organizations.
