M4.5 Quake Shakes Hawaii’s Big Island

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says a magnitude-4.5 earthquake jolted the Big Island of Hawaii.

The observatory says the quake struck at 2:18 a.m. Saturday. It was centered about five miles north of the small town of Naalehu at a depth of six miles.

There were no reports of damage or injury. People around the island reported light shaking. The observatory says light shaking isn’t expected to damage buildings.

Small aftershocks under magnitude-2 were recorded in the hours after.
