Lawsuit Charges California School Failed to Report Abuse Allegation

October 22, 2015

A new lawsuit says a California high school failed to take appropriate steps when a parent reported suspected sexual abuse by a wrestling coach who is now serving time on similar charges.

The San Mateo County Times reported that the suit says San Ramon Valley Unified School District conducted its own investigation and cleared 28-year-old wrestling coach Kevin Lopez of wrongdoing.

But state law requires that school officials notify authorities, and that’s what they did when another parent reached out a year later.

Stop AbuseThe lawsuit was filed by one of Lopez’s victims. San Ramon Capt. Dan Pratt confirmed Tuesday police were never notified about the original allegation.

Early this year, Lopez was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison.

Ramon Valley Unified spokeswoman Elizabeth Graswich declined to comment.
