Colorado Home Manufacturer Faces $222K in OSHA Penalties

August 17, 2021

Federal workplace safety officials cited a Colorado home manufacturing company for continuing to expose workers to falls at Pueblo facility.

Key Structures LLC faces $222,055 in OSHA penalties and 13 willful, repeat and serious violations for exposing employees to defective scaffolding and ladders, and failing to train workers on scaffolding safety.

OSHA previously cited the company for numerous violations found in September 2020 and January 2021 investigations.

Two follow-up inspections by OSHA in February 2021 at Key Structures found the company failed to abate the problems from the previous inspections, which involved workers falling from a scaffold and a ladder.

OSHA’s most recent inspection identified one willful violation for using damaged scaffolding, one repeat for failing to train workers on scaffolding safety; and seven serious violations, including unsafe use of ladders and scaffolding, failure to use personal fall protection and unsafe storage of compressed gas cylinders.

Formed in 2018, Key Structures is a subsidiary of The Challenger Group, a privately held real estate and construction company headquartered in Colorado Springs.

Key Structures has 15 business days from receipt of the citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
