California-Oregon Wildfires Prompt Evacuation Orders

August 17, 2023

Growing fires near the California-Oregon border have prompted evacuation orders.

A Siskiyou County wildfire, the Head Fire, started in the Klamath National Forest after a bout of thunderstorms and lightning.

A social media post from U.S. Forest Service reported 13 fires in the region. Three were contained, and the remaining 10 fires are burning over 1,500 acres.

“Firefighters are facing challenges due to extreme weather conditions and rugged terrain,” the post states in part. “Overnight an infrared flight will occur, weather permitting, to provide a more accurate assessment of the size of the fires.”

Evacuation orders were put in place by the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office, and Caltrans reported that U.S. Highway 199 remains fully closed in Del Norte County from Pioneer Road to Oregon Mountain Road (PM 16 to 31) due to the fires.

According to the interagency fire information website inciweb, the Six Rivers National Forest received roughly 150 lightning strikes across the forest since Tuesday evening, resulting in multiple fires across the forest.
