A report from the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services for the third quarter shows a rise in work-related compensable fatalities.
The department’s Quarterly Fatality report for the third quarter 2023 measures these workplace fatalities from July 1 to Sept. 30.
The DCBS reported notifications of 14 fatalities accepted for workers’ compensation benefits, eight more than in the same period a year earlier. Of the 14 fatalities accepted by insurers during the 3rd quarter, one was for a worker who died prior to 2023.
The Quarterly Fatality Report presents compensable fatalities grouped by industry. Agriculture, forestry, fishing, logging had the most fatalities with seven, up from one for the 3rd quarter of 2022, the report shows. Other industries that contributed to the 3rd quarter 2023 total included: manufacturing; wholesale trade; retail trade; administrative support & waste management; and healthcare and social assistance.
The data does not include worker deaths not subject to Oregon workers’ comp coverage, such as self-employed workers, employees of out-of-state employers, federal employees or city of Portland police and fire employees.
