California Self-Insured Group Applauds Workers’ Comp Classification Changes

The California Restaurant Mutual Benefit Corp. is applauding upcoming changes in workers’ compensation classifications for California’s restaurant and hospitality sectors, The changes were announced by the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California. The update to the classification system is set to take effect on Sept. 1.

The update introduces six new classifications within the restaurant and hospitality sectors to reflect the diverse operations and risk profiles across the industry. The new classifications aim to provide a more accurate representation of risk, enabling fairer premium assessments.

“Understanding the implications of the new classifications on policies and rates is crucial,” Kaya Stanley, CEO and board chair of CRMBC, said in a statement. “While the immediate impact on rates is expected to be neutral, the long-term benefits of more accurately identifying risks and performance cannot be understated. This reclassification will enable more strategic decisions regarding loss prevention, safety programs, and overall risk management—ultimately benefiting the entire industry.”

The strategic adjustment is part of WCIRB’s ongoing efforts to improve the standard classification system.

CRMBC is a California self-insured group formed by restaurant owners for restaurant owners. The WCIRB is California’s provider of actuarially based information and research, advisory pure premium rates and educational services.
